The 2019 CCF Golf Classic
The 2019 CCF Golf Classic was an inspiring event. At the ninth annual tournament, honored Veterans and their families joined CCF donors and supporters to raise needed funds for CCF’s Signature Programs. Here’s a quick look at how the event unfolded.
On Sunday, Oct. 13, a caravan of black SUVs, decorated with American flags waving in the breeze, transported the Veterans and their families to the beautiful Resort at Pelican Hill in Newport Coast, CA from their Carrington Aviation Hero Flights originating all over the continental US.
That evening, an intimate gathering at the Pelican Grill near the Golf Pavilion allowed Veterans and their families to enjoy appetizers and camaraderie with eachother, the CCF Board and Members of the CCF Advisory Board. Kids made crafts and played games at a special table before everyone sat down for a plated dinner.
On Monday, Oct. 14, the day started early, with Carrington Associates and volunteers arriving around 6 a.m. to set up for a great day of golf. After registration and a buffet breakfast, guests headed to a nearby hillside for opening ceremonies that included a golf ball drop by helicopter, a presentation of the American flag by Newport Beach’s American Legion Color Guard, a group photo and a rousing rendition of the National Anthem by Donna Cunningham, the wife of Carrington Associate Adam Cunningham.
Veterans and their golf partners then got into a fleet of golf carts, and were cheered by Carrington Associates as they headed to either of two beautiful resort courses for the shotgun start and 18 great holes of golf.
That afternoon, Veterans and guests mingled near the Golf Pavilion for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, as well as to bid on the many silent auction offerings. A bit later, during a seated dinner program ably emceed by U.S. Navy Veteran Matt Driskill, singer and artist Joe Everson sang the National Anthem as he painted – upside down, no less! – a spectacular portrait of a saluting Marine. CCF Board Chairman Rosemary Rose and CCF Board member Lori Grigg then welcomed the attendees at the Banquet and announced the tournament winners, after which dinner began.
A bit later, Matt Driskill introduced the evening’s featured speakers. These included Lt. Gen. Ronald L. Bailey, USMC, Retired, who welcomed all the Veterans in attendance during a roll call. Matt Driskill then introduced Bruce Rose, Founder and CEO of the Carrington Companies, who welcomed everyone and outlined CCF’s impressive record of service to Veterans, being sure to thank the many donors who make those successes possible. Then Carrington House recipient U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills spoke about his Veteran journey and CCF’s support of the nonprofit Travis Mills Foundation, followed by testimony from another Veteran, U.S. Army Sergeant Matthew Melancon, who is expected to begin planning for his Carrington House home in 2020.
Then, during a spirited live auction led by auctioneer favorite Mark Schenfeld, guests bid on such items as Joe Everson’s painting; two excursions to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon Dunes, OR; a trip to the 2020 Ryder Cup; and an exclusive trip to Positano, Italy;. Don’t miss the event next year, when the CCF Golf Classic will celebrate its 10th great year on Oct. 12, 2020.
