Donate Whatever You Can to Local Food Banks

April 16, 2020

In last month’s newsletter, we asked everyone to contribute to their local area food bank. We could not have anticipated the urgent demand for emergency food aid caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In communities across the United States –  as many businesses remain closed and people are unemployed – more and more families do not have nearly enough to eat.

The statistics are sobering and saddening. According to Feeding America, the national food bank network:

• In some regions of the country, food banks and pantries distributed 849% more food in March of this year compared to a similar period last year.

• One in three people seeking groceries at food banks and pantries last month have never previously sought emergency food aid.

• Helplines set up by food banks are overwhelmed with thousands of calls per day, 90% of which come from newly unemployed people.

• Food banks are facing a “perfect storm”. There has been a rise in food costs, a decline in donations, and usually reliable volunteers are staying home due to the coronavirus – all as demand is dramatically increasing.

Supporting a local food bank with non-perishable food items is now more important than ever. Many food banks are having a hard time meeting the needs of the people who count on them in order to feed their families.

Do you have food to spare? If so, won’t you please consider making a donation to your local food bank? Below is a list of food assistance organizations in your community.
