Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Every October our charity focus turns to Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a worldwide annual campaign involving thousands of organizations, to highlight the importance of breast awareness, education and research. Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.
How can you help in the efforts to find a cure? One way is to take part in a local charity walk. Find walks close to you by visiting the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure website, which has an interactive map of scheduled walks. There’s also the American Cancer Society’s event, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Avon sponsors the Walk to End Breast Cancer in more than 200 cities and towns. If you can’t find a walk nearby, however, you can also check the National Breast Cancer Foundation, which offers a page on how to start a fundraiser of your own.
• Put together a team or walk alone! Although it’s fun to do a charity walk with friends, family and co-workers, nothing says you can’t go solo. Reach out and share with everyone what you’re doing, then invite them to participate. You might be surprised at who’s inspired to join you. Whether you’re a team of five to 10 or more, or a team of one powerfully determined individual, you can make a difference.
• Create your fundraising page (and don’t forget to share it!). Once you sign up for a walk, most sites will give you the opportunity to create a fundraising page that makes it easy for people to donate in your honor for your walk. Splash it across social media, share it via e-mail, and encourage everyone you know to share it, too.
• If you submit your walk fundraising page to CCF at least one month ahead of your date AND you participate in Casual for a Cause, you’re eligible for a match from the CCF Board of Directors.
We hope you’ll consider participating in a Breast Cancer Awareness event next month, whether you join an existing walk or create one of your own. Please help make a difference in the fight against breast cancer – and share with us the stories and photos of your volunteer, charitable and fundraising efforts!
