More than 1,900 athletes took part in the Special Olympics Southern California’s 49th Summer Games June 9-10 at Cal-State Long Beach. Carrington, a longtime sponsor of Special Olympics, had 50 Associates on the scene as volunteers all weekend, helping the more than 10,000 attendees find events, cheer on competitors, and have fun throughout both days.
“We hosted the most popular booth within the festival, where we had a basketball game, Carrington corn hole, and a spin-to-win wheel with the most sought-after prizes at the event,” reports Julie Beamish, RVP, Carrington Real Estate Services, and Carrington’s volunteer organizer for the SoCal Summer Games. “A big thanks to everyone who attended and volunteered. We truly witnessed the human spirt on display as we celebrated athletes from across Southern California. And a big congratulations to the athletes on their achievements!”
Among those competing were seven swim team members from the Irvine Eagles, coached by Lorie Georgeson, Senior Instructional Designer, Carrington Mortgage Holdings. “All seven got at least one medal in their events, and some of them got several medals,” says Georgeson, whose brother Chad is on the team. “My voice is a little hoarse from all of the cheering! I’m so grateful to have been part of this weekend. As one of the athletes so beautifully put it: `Whether you are in first place or last, as long as you smile, you’re a champion.’”
That sentiment is shared by Carrington Mortgage Holdings Management Associate Ashley Arganda, who was one of Carrington’s team of volunteers at the games. “I felt honored to be part of such a powerful and important event,” she says. “Their spirits were high, and their achievements were well deserved. I look forward to volunteering next year and meeting more of these amazing athletes.”
