Breast Cancer Awareness: 2 Associates’ Stories and Last Call for Grant Nominations

October 25, 2022

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It’s a time devoted to educating everyone about how this pervasive cancer affects one in eight women, and why early detection and access to high-quality health care are the best methods of prevention.

Carrington Associates consistently do their part to help raise awareness of this important cause every year by participating in walks, runs and other fundraising events throughout the country.

Associates Joining the Cause in 2022
DeAnn Johnson will be walking in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day for the Cure in San Diego, Nov. 18-20, 2022.  The three-day, 60-mile walk raises funds to increase awareness and early detection, as well as assists those who are less fortunate with medical treatments and support. Each participant is required to raise a minimum of $2,300, and DeAnn says she is up to the challenge.

“Cancer affects everyone, and I don’t have to look far to know of friends and family members who have had the disease,” she says. “And if we can cure breast cancer, we can cure every cancer. I walk and raise money because I can, while some others cannot.”

Emilia Castillo will do TWO Susan G Komen 3-day 60-miles walks in 2022. Her first walk this year was in August; and she’ll be joining DeAnn in San Diego Nov. 18-20.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 years ago, and walk to raise awareness,” says Emilia. “I’ve been blessed and fortunate to overcome breast cancer, and now it’s my mission to help out others. In my family, my mom and younger sister were also affected by breast cancer. I’m happy to say that the three of us are survivors and enjoying life to the fullest!”

Nomination for Grants Reminder

This year, as in previous years since its inception, CCF is pledging $10,000 in grants toward breast-cancer-related causes. Nominations must be walks or fundraisers for which the Associate has a fundraising page where they currently are actively raising funds, or have already raised funds for during 2022. Only breast-cancer-related nonprofits that are sponsoring walks/runs/events in which a Carrington or Vylla Associate participates are eligible. Walks/runs/events that have already taken place this year are also eligible. Please contact us at and let us know what organization is deserving of a grant from CCF. The deadline for nominations is Friday, October 28, 2022.
